A Thai Navy Seal, who took part in the dramatic rescue of the Wild Boar footballers from a flooded cave in northern Thailand last year, succumbed to a lung infection he contracted during the mission, a senior Navy official said on Friday (December 27).

THE “WILD BOARS” youth football team, whose plight captivated the world a year ago when they were trapped for nearly three weeks in a flooded cave, paid their respects on Monday to a diver who died trying to save them.

His Majesty the King has granted graciously a posthumous promotion to a former Navy SEAL diver who lost his life during the mission to rescue the 13 footballers stranded in the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai.

The marathon rescue operation to bring 12 young footballers and their coach out of a flooded cave in Chiang Rai claimed its first fatality on Friday when a former Navy SEAL diver died while working in the cave.

Rescue teams have already diverted water flow from at least two channels before it enters the Tham Luang cave where 13 survivors have been stranded since June 23.

SUPPORT TEAMS outside the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai were yesterday waiting eagerly for a signal from the team searching for 12 teen footballers and their assistant coach who have been trapped inside the flooded cave since June 23.
