Sparks are flying in Surat Thani’s Koh Tao island again now that some of its fire spinners have returned.

A marine expert rejected recent reports saying that 280 whale sharks had been spotted in Thailand last year, saying the possibility is that the same whale sharks were seen 280 times.

A four-metre-long whale shark showed up to welcome visitors at Koh Tao’s Chumphon Pinnacle as Surat Thani province opened its doors to foreign tourists on Monday. The shark, nicknamed “Phi Jood” (dotted brother), appeared to be greeting divers off the coast of the island.

A school of young whale sharks was reportedly spotted by divers near Surat Thani’s Koh Tao Island on Thursday.
