After the Department of Livestock Development officially put Thailand’s pork shortage and surging prices to an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, the authorities immediately enforced tight controls.

The African Swine Fever (ASF) should not affect Thailand’s pork exports as it is strictly adhering to standards set by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and importers, the Department of Livestock Development said on Sunday.

The National Farmers Council is calling on the government to immediately compensate farmers who were forced to cull their pigs to contain the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).

The ongoing shortage of breeding pigs and piglets will keep the price of pork high for about three years, Dr Somphon Issawilanon, a senior academician at the National Institute of Brainstorming, said on Thursday.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said on Wednesday that he had ordered the Department of Livestock Development to immediately investigate risky areas after a sample collected from a slaughterhouse in Nakhon Pathom was found to have a trace of African Swine Fever (ASF) earlier this week.

The government on Sunday denied covering up an outbreak of African swine fever (AFS) in Thailand amid growing suspicion that AFS is to blame for falling local pork supplies and surging prices. AFS is already decimating pig herds in neighbouring Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as well as dozens of other countries.

The price of live pigs and pork has risen sharply now that the quantity of pigs has dropped due to the African swine fever (ASF), Wiwat Pongwiwatchai, vice president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand, said on Wednesday (May 27).
