Pregnant woman killed in Pattani
A MANHUNT has been launched for a gunman who shot dead a pregnant woman and wounded another female in a cold-blooded attack in the deep South on Saturday night.
The drive-by motorcycle attack on the pair, both Buddhists, at a market in Pattani’s Panare district has been condemned as brutal and inhumane by police and human rights activists.
“We are gathering evidence and checking footage from security cameras,” Colonel Yuttanam Petchmuang said yesterday in his capacity as deputy spokesman of the Forward Command, Internal Security Operations Command Region 4.
Baby also killed
The heavily pregnant woman, Rattikarn Jawang, 26, died along with her unborn baby. The other victim, 30-year-old Saijai Thongdee, is being treated in Pattani Hospital.
“This attack took place at the time when the world has campaigned to stop violence against women,” National Human Rights Commission member Angkhana Neelapaijit said. She condemned the shooting as inhumane and an offence against all religions.
Angkhana expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families, and said she was heading to the area to get in touch with them.
“I would like to extend moral support to authorities in trying to bring the culprits to justice,” she said, adding that victims and their families should receive the support they need from the authorities.
