Six Mae Sot police officers suspended after two Chinese fugitives escape

The Mae Sot police chief and five of his subordinates have been moved to inactive posts after two Chinese fugitives escaped from detention during a party at the police station.

National police chief Pol General Jakthip Chaijinda signed an order on Tuesday to have second acting Mae Sot police station chief Pol Colonel Manas Sornpraphan and five other senior officers moved to inactive posts at the police headquarters in Bangkok.
Police sources said the order came after two Chinese fugitives, who are wanted back home, escaped their detention cell on Friday night while police officers were enjoying a party hosted by a Chinese migrant in the district.
The two fugitives were among the 12 Chinese people arrested on October 23 after Immigration Bureau acting chief Maj-General Surachate Hakpal ordered Mae Sot police to investigate allegations that Chinese migrants were providing wireless Internet access from Thailand to casinos on the Myanmar side.
Police also seized 50 sets of wireless Internet streaming devices from the detainees.
On Friday, the Mae Sot Court slapped a Bt3,000 fine on each of the 12 detainees and ordered them to be deported back to Myanmar. However, sources said two of the detainees, who have now escaped, were to be handed over to the Chinese authorities.
