SRT restructuring plan goes before economic ministers today

The Transport Ministry will submit the restructuring plan for the State Railway of Thailand's operations to economic ministers today, and to the full Cabinet next week.

The most urgent part of the plan covers 2010-2014 and features the reinforcement of rail tracks and changes to the signalling system.

The SRT will also procure new 77 locomotives and repair 56 existing locomotives for a combined cost of Bt46 billion during the period.

The restructuring plan will also see the SRT amending regulations in order to separate assets into core and non-core businesses.

The State agency will reorganise its operations into three key business units: train operations, asset management and technical. It will set up a subsidiary to manage the Airport Rail Link.

The SRT will also assign two of its seven deputy governors to oversee its basic infrastructure group, while another will be appointed to oversee the support group, three to oversee the three core business units, and the seventh to oversee the subsidiary formed to run the Airport Rail Link.

The plan will also see the SRT revising some of the seven employment agreements made under the state-enterprise labour law, in order to improve staff management.
