TIPS TO PLAY WITH WATER IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

On April 8 2007

To friends as travellers,

You might have come to Chiang Mai before but here is my experience as a local to share ideas and make you enjoy playing water or actually is called " splash water". You will also know that people start playing water from 10 - 15 April every year.

People from most part of Thailand come to play water in Chiang Mai where people play or fight with water to each other. What you should prepare yourself are:

 1. Always wear sunglasses to protect both your eyes from getting infected with blackened (Dirty) water and the hot -bright sun. The high-pressured water pump devices are currently prohibited and strict. A plastic bucket is alright.

 2. Only clean water through  pay-in coin water tabs you may find if you are keen to somebody's health is around the Tapae roads and the popular Tapae gate in  good spots you can easily find.

 3. Walking to the destination is suggested as you will see huge people around the city playing water along the city moats and traffic condition can be as bad as everyday life in Bangkok. To make matter of worst, the "water fighter' will not allow you to pass their territories but with big splash of  water they only offer you.

 4. Wherever you go, it is inevitable soaked you are without complaints. You therefore should prepare extra clothes to get change if you aim for going to the cinema or the shopping mall. Wearing in a raincoat will look funny or you might be attacked in the scenario called " Water battle" you will never forget.

Have fun and get ready to be soaked!!!!

Tongmaejo,

I have to agree with Brian Davies' post. While better than last month, the air is still pretty bad. I think that it's only fair to inform potential visitors of the problem.

I'm a bit concerned over this attempt to get tourists to Songkran in Chiang Mai in the first place. Are you not aware that Chiang Mai has had a large number of days in recent months when carcinogenic particles in the air have reached "dangerous" levels? There is every chance that there will be high readings at Songkran (they are on the edge of "dangerous" today), and that tourists will attend an event which will seriously damage their health. The Chiang Mai governor has 'guaranteed' that the air will be clear of smoke by Songkran. That is irresponsible. No-one can guarantee that. In 1999, a year very similar to this one in terms of smoke levels, the smoke and carcinogens remained at dangerous levels till JUNE. If you were concerned about people's health and safety, you should be advising them to stay well, well away from Chiang Mai.
