A total of 188 countries are covered in the TIP report with Thailand ranked in Tier 3 along with North Korea, Yemen, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the likes.
In 2014, Malaysia and Thailand were both ranked at Tier 3.
Thai authorities said the latest TIP report does not reflect the measures taken by the government over the past year in tackling cross-border human trafficking cases involving Rohingya and other migrants.
At Tier 3, the US president is empowered to impose penalties on trade with Thailand within the next 90 days.
