Pachyderms on parade

The popular King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament moves up to the outskirts of Bangkok this year and is taking place at VR Sports Club, Samut Prakan, from August 27 to 31.

Sixteen teams with 50 players are taking part in the 2014 event and include local television stars, supermodels and professional polo players. The elephant festival will offer fun for everyone, with an impressive opening parade, Children's Day, Ladies Day and wide a range of pachyderm-related activities for the whole family. Whitney in wax

Madame Tussauds Bangkok adds to its superstar collection with a brand new wax figure of the late singer Whitney Houston. Houston, who would have turned 51 last week, was discovered dead in her hotel room in 2012. The unveiling of her wax likeness on August 9 was attended by a wealth of Thai celebrities. Festival of the dead

Wat Chaisri in Khon Kaen province holds the annual merit-making ceremony "Bun Khao Pradab Din" on August 24. The ceremony, which is organised in honour and recognition of deceased members of the community, sees villagers cooking and leaving small portions of food on earth to appease the dead returning from the underworld. The ceremony is worth visiting for the spectacular ritual, and the temple itself is famous for its finest murals and small chapel.

Bhumibol Dam International Mountain Bike Championship returns to Tak province on August 30 and 31. The competition offers a range of events from a 10-kilometre leisure cycling to 60-kilometre international race.
