TRAVELLERS' CHECK

Direct flight from Bangkok to Danang

The airport is located three kilometres southwest of Danang city ...

Q: Danang is the largest city in central Vietnam and services direct flights from Bangkok. Its new terminal opened just a few days ago, but Bangkok flights will still use the old terminal.

A: The airport is located three kilometres southwest of Danang city centre and about 30 kilometres from Hoi An. It's easy to get a metered taxi immediately outside the terminal building. You may share the trip with other passengers heading to the same destination. The cost shouldn't exceed US$15 if you haggle and the drive will take less than an hour.

There are no public buses from Danang International Airport to Hoi An. However, you can take a bus from Danang Bus Station, which costs around $3. You'll need to get a motorbike taxi from the airport to the bus station, which is in the town centre.

The Danang-Hoi An buses do not go over the Hai Van Pass but take the long tunnel under the pass. You will be dropped at Hoi An bus station, and from there, you'll need to take a motorbike taxi into the old city, which costs around 10,000 dong, or walk.

It's obviously a lot less hassle to just take a taxi direct to your accommodation in Hoi An.

Bon voyage!

Q: How much alcohol can I bring into Thailand? I'd like to bring three bottles of wine from Italy for friends in Thailand. I'm not buying them duty free so is it okay to bring them into the country? Jane K

A: Where you buy the alcohol is not relevant. If the amount you bring into Thailand exceeds customs' regulations, you will be charged customs duty. Thai customs regulations allow each passenger to bring in one litre of alcohol, which covers wine, spirits, beer and other beverages. So you will need to check how much you are bringing. For a bottle of wine, the standard wine bottle is 750 millilitres. In practical terms, you are allowed to bring in two bottles.

Those with nothing to declare walk through the green channel and are subject to random inspections. If you are called by a custom official, you luggage will be scanned and if you are over the allowance, the penalty can be stiff. You are supposed to proceed to the Red channel if you bring in more than one litre or if you unsure about the status of what you have brought in with you. You can also choose to drop any excess into the voluntary forfeiture boxes provided before entering the customs clearance queues.

I am planning a trip to Hoi An soon. Could you please tell me the best and cheapest way to get from the airport to my hotel in Hoi An old town? Are there tourist buses or taxis running from Danang airport to Hue and if so, do they travel via the Van pass? How much can I expect to pay? Thank you. Somsamai
