Checking in with an app

Marriott has expanded its Mobile App to cover mobile check in all over the world.

First launched at 329 hotels in the US and Canada, the state-of-the-art mobile check-in service is now available at 20 additional Marriott hotels in 19 countries including Thailand, Singapore, India, Australia and Philippines. With the Marriott Mobile App, Marriott Rewards members, who have downloaded the app, can check-in through a smartphone as early as 4pm the day before arrival, receiving an automatic notification when the room is ready.

Love at altitude

Winter sports fans planning to spend Valentine's Day in the mountains can now book high-altitude speed dating in a chair lift in Alberta, Canada. The cable ways in the Mount Norquay ski region will be declared "Lifts of Love" on February 14. Skiers and snowboarders can exchange names and phone numbers on the ride between 6.30 and 9pm, according to Travel Alberta. - DPA

About a bag

The Kremlin has ordered the removal from Moscow's Red Square of a giant suitcase advertising French fashion label Louis Vuitton installed near the Lenin Mausoleum. The GUM department store, which put up the nine-metre-high and 30-metre-long carpet bag, did not have all the required permits, Kremlin spokesman Viktor Khrekov told the RIA Novosti news agency. GUM said that it had asked Louis Vuitton to remove the suitcase, which was installed to mark the department store's 120th anniversary. - DPA

New city gallery for Seoul

The range of sights in the South Korean capital Seoul has gained another attraction with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) opening a mid-city art gallery after two years of construction. It is the institution's third branch. A large portion of the new three-storey museum complex is situated underground. Following the "open museum" concept, it has multiple entrances. The parts of the building are connected through gardens and courtyards patterned on traditional Korean living courtyards or madang. The new museum is located on the grounds of a former military hospital that was later used as headquarters of the military secret service.

On ice in the park

The scene is well known from any number of films - a couple in love go ice skating hand-in-hand in Central Park in New York. Wollman Rink, located near the zoo, now invites lovers and friends of every age to skate around the ice. There's an ice-skating school, lockers and rental skates too. Visitors must pay an entrance fee even if they don't skate.

Flying high with Emirates

Emirates has decided to use only Airbus A380 planes for flights between Munich and Dubai with effect from March 30. The world’s largest passenger aircraft has so far been used only on one of the two daily connections. The upgrade will increase the airline’s capacity on the route to about 1,800 seats weekly.
