35% of Asia-Pacific consumers want tablets

Out of the 1,300 Asia-Pacific consumers surveyed by Microsoft, 35 per cent desire tablets, while 25 per cent also look for notebooks and ultrabooks.

The respondents still want a full-fledged computing device for their lives, but it has to be small enough to be carried around.

Tablet ownership in Asia-Pacific is expected to surge this year, with Canalys predicting that tablets will form close to half of the global PC market, consisting of desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets. Close to 285 million units are expected to be shipped in Asia-Pacific.

However, most respondents do not favour a tablet just for content consumption or gaming. Instead, consumers demand a flexible and modern operating system that allows them to work and play.

About 53 per cent own multiple devices such as a PC, laptop and smartphone. In a world where multiple devices tangle with each other, 67 per cent prefer a simplified and unified user experience across all their devices.

Consumers are relying more and more on high-quality apps to help them with work, play and staying connected to the people and information that matter the most to them.

Social apps top the list. About 25 per cent of the consumers in Asia-Pacific admitted that social apps are the first app they wake up to in the morning, while over half of the respondents suggested that they log onto their social media accounts at least once every three hours.

Respondents are also most likely to be launching messaging and music apps while on the go, and they are most likely to pay for gaming, books and magazines, and utilities apps.

The survey was conducted in November in Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
