Mapping Ayutthaya through the centuries November 25, 3pm, The Siam Society Take a journey through Ayutthaya’s fascinating past with “Ayutthaya: A Cartographic Vision, 1459-1800”, a talk by leading map collector and author Thavatchai Tangsirivanich, who spent 10 years painstakingly putting together the first comprehensive survey on the Western cartography of the ancient city. In this illustrated lecture, he will present his findings, which include “Scierno”, the first known Western alias for Ayutthaya, the earliest extant Western portrayal of Ayutthaya, produced long before the arrival of Portuguese traveller Duarte Fernandes in 1511. A selection of rare books and maps from the Ayutthaya period will be on display. The admission fee is Bt150 for non-members. Siam Society members, members’ spouses and children, and all students showing valid student ID cards, are admitted free of charge. See the rise and fall of King Narai December 8, 1.30 to 3.30pm, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, Taling Chan Prof Preedi Pitbhumvithi, a PhD candidate on History at Porto University, Portugal, talks about the coup during the reign of King Narai as part of a cultural tour to Lop Buri on December 10. Highlights of the visit include King Narai’s palace and throne halls, Baan Vichaiyen, and Prathinangyen where King Narai witnessed the lunar eclipse.
