The year started with a grim mood after several bomb explosions rocked Bangkok on New Year’s Eve, killing three people and injuring more than 40 others. As many high-profile figures were quick to point the finger at the old political elite, ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra circulated a handwritten letter denying any involvement in the attacks.
Despite living in exile, Thaksin still made headlines in Thailand. There was huge media coverage when he and his wife Pojaman lost their diplomatic passports and when he gave an interview to CNN, saying “Enough is enough” in response to a question about whether he would return to politics. Thaksin’s meeting with a Singapore deputy prime minister prompted a diplomatic row between Thailand and Singapore.
In late January, Suvarnabhumi Airport managed to steal the headlines, but not for good reasons. The public was stupefied to find the airport, launched just a few months earlier, had sustained runway cracks so serious that air traffic was disrupted. |
