The much-awaited general election - the first post-coup poll - was held on December 23. The Thaksin-allied People Power Party won the largest portion of House seats of 233 while its arch-rival Democrat Party had 165 seats. The Chart Thai Party became the third-largest party with 37 seats. The final coalition formula is not expected until the year's end.
Eligible voters of 32,759,009 people (74.45%) turned out to cast the ballots. It is the new record turnout. The previous high of 72.56% was recorded in 2005.
Over 25,000 prison inmates nationwide received a royal pardon by the King on the occasion of his 80th birthday. A total of 85 inmates on death row also received royal clemency and had their terms reduced to life imprisonment. They included Dr Wisuth Boonkamsemsant, charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Phassaporn, in a high-profile case several years ago. |
