December 10 , 2005 - About 80,000 people attended “Muang Thai Rai Sapda” at Lumpini Park yesterday, almost double the number of attendance for the show two weeks ago. Some group-leaders of teachers protesting against the much-opposed school-transfer plan said on Thursday they expected some 30,000 teachers to attend the show, yet no such mass gathering of teachers was seen yesterday.
Twenty youngsters claiming to be students were pamphleteering. They wore white T-shirts with the slogan “We Love The King” printed on the front and “Go Home” on the back.
Over 1,000 regular police and half as many municipal police provided security at the event yesterday. Their increased number was to ensure that no provocateurs could turn the event into a melee as had been rumoured.
After the show, Saman Sri-ngam, host of FM 92.25 radio, urged Sondhi Limthongkul to keep his promise to call on Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to step down and hand his executive powers over to His Majesty the King.
Late into the evening, hundreds waited around the Rama VI statue for his pledged call.
