The People Power Party is actually the reincarnation of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, which was disbanded at the order of the Constitution Tribunal on May 30. The TRT, which was founded by exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was found guilty of violating the Political Parties Act.

A total of 111 TRT executive members, including Thaksin, have been stripped of their electoral rights for five years as a result of the landmark ruling. Many former MPs left the party while the remaining key figures later regrouped and took over a previously little known small party called Palang Prachachon (People Power) and assigned a new party logo resembling that of the TRT. Veteran politician Samak Sundaravej was picked to lead the rebadged political party.
