Introduction

Before the Constitution Tribunal delivered its historic verdict on Thai Rak Thai and the Democrat Party, breakaway factions of former Thai Rak Thai members formed new groups out of sheer desperation. Somsak Thepsuthin created the Matichima Group, while Somkid Jatusripitak put together the Thammathipatai Group to try to gather MPs from the North and Central regions.

Both politicians hoped to set up their own parties and merge later to run in the election. However, the court verdict shattered their dreams.
Thai Rak Thai was found guilty of electoral fraud and ordered to disband, while the Democrats were acquitted. The court banned 111 Thai Rak Thai executives, including ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, from the electoral process for five years.

Since Somsak and Somkid were banned from politics, they had to find a new leader for their new party. Somsak backed political scientist and key member of the antiThaksin campaign Chaianan Samudavanija for the job, while members of Somkid’s group wanted someone from within the party. These differences created enough of a ruckus to break them up.
