Lack of skilled monks

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has expressed concern over the scarcity of monks who can perform traditional intonations of Buddhist tales, a senior Office of National Buddhism (ONB) official said yesterday.

Thawil Samakratthakij said the princess expressed her worry after attending a special session of intonation, held on Thursday to retroactively mark her 50th birthday in April, when a Mahajataka tale was intonated by a monk.

To promote intonation and encourage monks nationwide to practise, the ONB is now preparing to recruit qualified monks to record their intonations for free distribution to Buddhist temples, as well as for sale to the public.

Phra Khru Palad Rachan Ariyo, a well-known monk whose intonations have become a big hit among young audiences, said only around 20 monks throughout the country can perform the craft.

The ONB was also preparing to record a special intonation chapter to commemorate the 60th anniversary next year of His Majesty the King's ascension to the throne.

All temples nationwide will perform group intonations of this commemoration starting January 1 next year.

The ONB recently held a special series of preaching of all Ten Chapters of the Mahajataka tales in intonation at the Buddha Monthol ground in Nakhon Pathom province between October 4 and 7.
