HRH the Grand Duke Henri is the eldest son of the Grand Duke Jean and the Grand Duchess of Josephine-Charlotte. His Royal Highness became the head of state of Luxembourg on Oct 7, 2001, on the abdication of his father. He is Luxembourg's sixth grand duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established.
Born on April 16, 1955, Grand Duke Henri obtained a Staff College Certificate at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (UK). He studied economics and political science at the University of Geneva and graduated with an Honours degree.
The Prince is married to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, formerly Miss Maria Teresa Mestre y Batista, who also graduated from Geneva University with an Honours degree in political science. The couple have five children: Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg; Prince Felix; Prince Louis; Princess Alexandra; and Prince Sebastien.
As the head of a constitutional monarchy, Grand Duke Henri's duties are primarily representative. However, he retains the constitutional power to appoint the Prime Minister and Government, to dissolve the Chamber of Deputies, to promulgate laws and to accredit ambassadors.
Grand Duke Henri is a member of the International Olympic Committee, a member of The Mentor Foundation (established by the World Health Organisation) and a Director of the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands.
The Grand Duke visited Thailand three times in 1993, 1996 and 1998. On his latest trip he visited as the leader of a group of business persons from Luxembourg.

Grand Duchy of Luxembourg:Located in western Europe, bordered by France, Belgium and Germany. The government is a constitutional monarchy. This stable, high-income economy, benefitting from its proximity to France, Belgium, and Germany, features solid growth, low inflation, and low unemployment.
Luxembourg and Thailand established formal relations on June 16, 1959. The two countries have a good relationship. In 1998, the Luxembourg government supported Bt10.5-million forestry project to celebrate the 50th coronation anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol in Chiangrai province.
