The Emir of the State of Kuwait
HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 15th Emir of Kuwait is the fourth son of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 10th Emir of Kuwait and the half-brother of the previous Emir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. His Highness was sworn in on January 29, 2006 after confirmation by the National Assembly of Kuwait.
Born on June 6, 1929, His Highness studied with private tutors at the royal court. He is married to Sheikha Fotouh Salman Al-sabah and has two sons and one daughter.
Among his numerous former positions, His Highness was previously Foreign Minister for 40 years, from 1963 to 2003, making him "Dean of Arab Diplomacy" and one of the longest-serving foreign ministers in the world. He was appointed Prime Minister by the previous emir in July 2003.
On Jan 15, 2006, when the previous emir passed away, the then Crown Prince Sheikh Saad was placed into the position of emir. However, on Jan 23, 2006, Sheikh Saad agreed to abdicate due to his illness. The ruling family chose Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad as the new emir of Kuwait.
His Highness visited Thailand’s Phuket in 2003.
The State of Kuwait:Located in the Middle East, bordered by the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The government is a constitutional hereditary emirate.
Kuwait is a small, rich, relatively open economy with self-reported crude oil reserves of about 96 billion barrels, 10 per cent of world reserves. Petroleum accounts for nearly half of GDP, 95 per cent of export revenues and 80 per cent of government income. Kuwait continues its discussions with foreign oil companies to develop fields in the northern part of the country.
Kuwait and Thailand established formal relations on June 14, 1963. The two countries have a good relationship in such aspects as trade, finance, industry, academic cooperation and tourism. |
