“Architecture seeks to tell the story of people’s way of life in each society. And that is a beautiful thing.”

Ur Say: Should celebrities be condemned for becoming pregnant outside of wedlock?

The recent announcement by unmarried TV host Kathleeya Mcintosh that she was five months’ pregnant was front-page news in the nation’s newspapers. Some people criticised Kathleeya, saying she was a public figure and her pregnancy was symbolic of an overall decline in Thai morality. Others said she was unduly maligned because she was a public figure. We asked students what they thought about the situation.

Chakorn Morakote, 20, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang

“Kathleeya is one of Thailand’s biggest stars, and it’s really important for people of her status to do things correctly. Superstars in Thailand aren’t like other people because they set examples for children. They represent Thai society. But then, again, it’s her personal matter. So, I can’t judge if it’s wrong or not.”

Chidchon Vichainarong, 20, Thammasart University

“I don’t think it is wrong. Pregnancy isn’t wrong, and it’s an individual’s personal matter. If someone gets pregnant and takes the responsibility for the child’s birth and care, that’s okay with me. Today, in Thailand, there are many people living together who aren’t married. And, I think superstars are just like the rest of us. What’s different is that their jobs make them well-known in society. This doesn’t mean that people have the right to control them.”

Piyapa Rodvanich, 20, Ramkhamhaeng University

“I don’t think you have to be a superstar to be condemned for getting pregnant before marriage. I think getting pregnant without being married is wrong. However in Kathleeya’s case, I think she tried to do something to show her sense of responsibility. So, she should be forgiven. Her only mistake was that she forgot she was a role model who should have been setting a good example for children in everything she does.”

Techarong Chuenpradist, 23, University of The Thai Chamber of Commerce

“I really don’t think it’s wrong. It is her personal matter and we, outsiders, should not criticise her. I think if it happened to someone other than Kathleeya, people would have deemed it business as usual. If it happens to anybody, everybody should try to hit upon the best solution; criticism is pointless.”
