Ur Say: How can we save energy?
The Thai government has launched several campaigns to reduce
energy consumption in an effort to combat the effects of rising
fuel costs. Here are some students’ ideas on how to save energy.
Nawaphan Metthanan, 21, Chulalongkorn University
“We mostly use electricity while at home. So to save energy,
we should find something to do besides watching television or surfing
the Internet or playing computer games. Like going outside to exercise
or meditate, or visiting with your family outdoors on nice days.
Riding a bicycle to nearby places can help you economise on transportation.
And this last one is something I personally recommend, especially
for women: I always eat veggies and fruit for my main meal. All
of this saves on gas and makes me healthy too.”
Nuttawut Putjun, 21, College of Fine Arts Bundit Patanasilp Institute
“I use candles instead of electric lights, especially when I’m
with my girlfriend, a barbecue instead of a gas stove when I’m with
friends, a fan instead an air conditioner, and I sometimes ride
a bicycle to exercise and save money. If my ways seem too strange,
then just do what the campaigns urge: turn off your lights and unplug
of your electrical appliances when you don’t need them.”
Sunasit Visirtsiri, 17, Siam Institute of Technology
“There are many ways I save energy, including supporting the
government’s policy. I try to turn off my air conditioner at 6am.
I usually read books in public places, like libraries and bookstores,
to save electricity at home. I always turn off my mobile phone at
10pm to decrease charging time, which wastes electricity.”
Worrada Pongrux, 21, Silpakorn University
“I think using a fan is better than using an air conditioner
and a blanket, and I turn off the tap every time I brush my teeth.
I always pour some water into my bottle of bath foam when it’s nearly
finished to rinse out the remainder and save money before buying
some more. And I use the soapy water that I used to my face to wash
my feet. First, wash your face with facial foam, catching the water
in a basin. Then take the basin to the bathtub and pour the water
on your feet to wash them. Lastly, rinse your feet with clean water.”
