Protests aim to bring down the government : Democrats

Strategists from the ruling Democrat Party have concluded the ongoing anti-government campaign is aimed at whitewashing ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra's wrongdoing while ultimately bringing down the government.

Democrat spokesman Buranat Samuttharak said Tuesday this belief came from the party's "war room" working group on political affairs.

He said the group decided the anti-government movement sought to achieve its aims by working in four areas: through the masses, with the help of the red shirts and the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship; through the opposition Pheu Thai Party; through Thaksin's allies overseas; and through a "war of the media".

The spokesman said the protests against the government have become increasingly violent while, at the same time, efforts were being made by opposition politicians to restore the socalled Thaksin regime.

Thaksin himself was working with foreign individuals and organisations in his campaign for a political comeback. Moreover, mainstream and underground media were being used to undermine the country's credibility, said the spokesman.

He said the working group was particularly concerned about the use of foreign media in questioning Thailand's justice system and infringement on royal power.

The Democrat working group proposed that to thwart the antigovernment movement, the administration should focus on solving the country's most serious problems- the economic crisis, woes affecting people like farmers and the unemployed, the insurgency in the deep South, and the drug trade and other crimes. The government was also asked to begin a new round of political reforms to bring about reconciliation.

The spokesman said that representatives from the working group would attend a meeting of government whips today when they would inform colleagues from other coalition parties about their findings.
