Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra started her first day as the Defence minister only after police were able to stop anti-government protesters from blocking her entrance into the ministry.
The roads near the ministry were temporarily closed to traffic to allow the PM’s van entering the ministry.
Yingluck’s motorcade entered through the ministry’s front gate. Deputy Defence Minister Gen Yuthasak Sasiprapha led the Armed Forces chiefs and high ranking military officials to welcome her.
After entering the ministry at 11am, Yingluck - the first female defence minister in Thai history - paid respect to the ministry’s spirit houses. Reporters and cameramen were banned from getting too close to her.
About 300 protesters earlier on the day tried to block her entry.
Police arrested Capt Songklod Chuenchupol or Capt Pookem after he lied down on the road in front of the gate to block Yingluck's entry.
The PM had cancelled her plan to worship the City Pillar Shrine today.
