Violence concerns NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern about the eruption of violent clashes between police and demonstrators in Bangkok yesterday.

The violence occurred after a large group of demonstrators tried to disrupt the candidacy-number draw for political parties registered to run in the February 2 election. Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

In its statement, the NHRC asked demonstrators to rally peacefully and without weapons. It also urged the government and relevant authorities not to use violent means, including firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

It added that relevant authorities should quickly deliver help to people affected by the violence.
