Suspend flood scheme forums, EC tells govt

The Election Commission (EC) has urged the interim government to suspend public forums on the Bt350-billion water- and flood-management scheme, saying they should resume after the election.

EC secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong said yesterday he had send an official letter to inform the permanent secretary at the PM's Office to suspend public forums for now.

"Even if a public forum is not related with reimbursement [of public funds] the government will use resources of a state agency and that would violate Article 181 of the Constitution.

"Hence, the government should postpone ongoing public forums," he said.

According to the PM's Office, public forums have been held in 74 provinces nationwide. To date, only three provinces -Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Nakhon Pathom - have not had a public forum on measures proposed under the scheme.

The EC has resolved that the forums must be suspended prior to the election.
