Non-elected premier unacceptable: Bhum Jai Thai

Bhum Jai Thai Party on Monday said it objected to the idea of having non-elected prime minister.

The party's leader Anutin Charnvirakul said that not only would his party not allow a non-elected prime minister to rule the country but that Pheu Thai but many other political parties held the same view. All parties should meet and talk if political problems are to be resolved, Anutin said.

Meanwhile Chart Thai Pattana de facto leader Banharn Silapaarcha said he saw many problems ahead for any future election, especially such legal issues as who would be authorised to set the date for the election. Furthermore, having an non-elected premier would pose problems.

They were speaking following the Constitutional Court's ruling that the February 2 snap election was unconstitutional and was therefore annulled.

Anutin and Banharn said they would field candidates in the new general election to be organised by the Election Commission.

"I think the Constitutional Court should have suggested a solution, as the country is still facing a dead end like this. In the current political situation, I don't know where the solution can be found," Banharn said.

Commenting on the political rallies led by Suthep Thaugsuban, Banharn said he only worried about the possibility of violence.

Banharn rebutted any possibility of his being the nonelected premier if the position were to be offered, saying he was already too old for the job.

"If some political parties boycott the election, it might again lead to the same reasons for the election being nullified," he said without elaboration.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul meanwhile called on the Democrat Party, which boycotted the February 2 election, to run in the upcoming election.

Democrat spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said it did not only depend on the party's executive and party members but also on whether the election would be free and fair.
