NCPO gives the nod to |six key bills

THE NATIONAL Council for Peace and Order has endorsed six urgent bills and will forward them to the National Legislative Assembly for consideration once that body exists.

The six bills, said to require immediate attention and implementation, are on: marine labour; debt collection; a civil and commercial code; permit issuance by the public-service sector; administrative procedure; and skill development.

The marine-labour bill is the initiative of the economic advisory board of the NCPO. It is aimed at protecting crews working on fishing boats and ensuring their standard of living, as many of them are foreign migrant workers, and to promote their skills.

The bill on debt collection aims to protect debtors from improper conduct by payment collectors. The bill seeks to control the mushrooming debt-collection services and prevent them from resorting to improper measures to make people pay up.

The bill regarding permits issued by the public-service sector was approved by the junta with the aim of streamlining the procedures of state agencies through the setting up of one-stop service centres in every province.

The bills, endorsed on Tuesday, will be submitted to the National Legislative Assembly once it is formed, tentatively in September.
