Songkhla is one of eight provinces with no candidates. Somchai said the EC had the authority to call on government officers to coordinate the running of elections under Article 8 of the EC Act, though the EC had opted not to do so. 

Somchai said he wanted the EC to meet three groups – national security officials, state officials linked to the government’s performance in the North and Northeast, where Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has been visiting, and governors of provinces that need to organise a re-registration of poll candidates.

However, in reaction to Somchai’s proposal, other EC members said they wanted to observe the situation before summoning state officers to give information.
