A runaway former leader of the Pheu Thai party on Tuesday announced the setting up of a freeThai organisation to counter the military junta.
Jarupong Ruangsuwan said in a YouTube video clip that he will serve as secretary general of the “Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy” (FT-HD) and run it from an unnamed country to which he fled after the coup.
The former interior minister who has lived in selfexile since May 22 refused to report to the military junta as summoned.
He said the military junta has violated the rule of law, abused democratic principles and destroyed people’s rights, liberties and human dignity.
The new organisation will fight against the junta to restore democracy and resist any moves by the junta.
He said he took the opportunity of June 24, the date in 1932 that Thailand or Siam as it was known then turned from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy and democracy.
