38 companies of police, troops to deal with protests Sunday

The junta will deploy 38 companies of police and troops to prevent protests at eight locations around Bangkok on Sunday as well as closing the Ratchaprasong Intersection, Deputy Police Commissioner-General Pol Col Somyos Pumphanmuang said Saturday.

The eight spots are the Ratchaprasong Intersection, King Taksin Monument, the Thepharak Intersection, the Victory Monument, the Democracy Monument, the Laksi Monument, Central Bangna, and Seacon Square on Srinakharind Road.

Somyos said the troops and police would guard the eight spots and fast deployment units will be also standby.

Traffic on four roads leading to the Victory Monument will be also closed from 4pm on Saturday and Sunday until the rally there ends, the traffic police announced.

The Ratchaprasong Intersection, where several major shopping malls and hotels are located, are the centre of the operations against protesters on Sunday because Sombat Boongnarmanong, an elusive red-shirt activist, announced he would hold a rally in front of a shopping mall at the intersection.

Sombat has been summoned by the National Council for Peace and Order but he ignored the summon.

Somyos said police will block roads from Chalermpao Intersection, Ploenchit Intersection, the Intersection in front of Big C Rajdamri and the Intersection in front of AUA Rajdami at 9 am Sunday to prevent protesters from approaching the Ratchaprasong Intersection. The roads will be blocked until the officials can control the situation or the rally ends.

Somyos said the people who want to pass through the road checkpoints will have to tell police the reasons they need to enter the zone.

Hotels, which are located in the blocked zone will have to send their staffs to man the checkpoints to facilitate their guests' arrival, Somyos said.

He said the Skywalk passing through the intersection will also be closed from 9 am Sunday until police could control the situation.

And the BTS' Chidlom, Ploenchit, and Rajdamrin stations will be closed and the sky trains will not stop there during the protest and operation of the security forces.

To avoid the protest, the Amarin Plaza and Gaysorn Plaza shopping malls will be closed on Sunday, they announced.

Zen and Central World, which is located in the blocked zone, announced they will open at 2pm Sunday and will close at 10pm.
