Re: "Thais will survive American disregard for its sovereignty", Letters, July 14
Regarding Horst Baer’s letter, “survival” can be defined subjectively. You could say South Sudan “survives”, or Syria or Iraq or Congo, but look at the reality on the ground. Saying “US disregards Thai sovereignty” is disingenuous at best.
American officialdom likes Thailand very much. It just doesn’t much care for the take over of control by an unelected entity, which happens to have the most and biggest guns.
The letter writer goes on to praise the Army, but what happens if they start issuing edicts that he and others don’t like? There are no checks and balances, certainly none by any democratically elected men or women. Thai citizens will have no choice but to grin and bear it, as the case may be.
