To help us, US must get its facts straight

Re: "Govt in legal fightback", Politics, April 9.

The US government, in trying to help Thailand resolve its political conflicts, needs to understand the following:

1. The current Thai government is plague with corruption - and it's getting worse;

2. The tyranny of the majority is real, ongoing and at a critical level;

3. The government's refusal to accept the ruling of the Constitutional Court has rendered it illegitimate in the eyes of the general public;

4. As a result, half of the population refuses to accept that true democracy is operating.

While the ruling Pheu Thai party refuses to agree to reform for fear of losing the upper hand, its opponents - who represent roughly half of the country's voters - insist on reform before election before they agree to participate in any voting.

This deadlock can be broken only when the leaders of the two sides agree to a discussion.

So far, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has not shown her leadership qualities by initiating or agreeing to a talk.
