The durian coup

A lot of letter-writers have chastised the US, UK, Australia and other developed countries for condemning the military coup in Thailand. They go on to claim the coup is good for the country. Well, the coup is like durian - an acquired taste.

Those who like durian say it has a pleasantly sweet fragrance, while those who can't tolerate it insist it smells like a combo of rotten sewage, old gym shoes and rotten eggs - with a dash of gasoline. Durian lovers (read: coup supporters) retort, "Vegemite, Limburger cheese and blue cheese smell 10 times worse than durian."

Both sides can argue until they turn blue, but they will never agree. It has something to do with acquired taste, guys.
