Re: "Surapong sold out Thailand's for myopic interests," Opinion, March 17.
Kavi Chongkittavorn was correct to say that of the 40 foreign ministers Thailand has had in the past two centuries since the founding of Krungthep, Surapong Tovichakchaikul is among the very worst. And if Thaksin Shinawatra and Noppadol Pattama – who served as foreign ministers in 1994 and 2008 respectively – had served longer than they did, they would have rivalled Surapong’s failures.
As our worst-ever foreign ministers, Thaksin, Noppadol and Surapong have marred Thailand’s past diplomatic achievements and record.
It takes people with outstanding leadership qualities, with uncommon flexibility and with the capability and devotion to put their country’s interests above everything else, to be good foreign ministers.
However, these three amateurish individuals flopped, and failed their country on the world stage miserably.
