Shame on the parents

Re: "Don't be a surrogate for money, mother warns", National, August 4.

It is a matter of shame to me that the parents who abandoned Baby Gammy to his lot are Australian. But I would like all Thai readers to know that Australians, almost to a man and woman, are outraged at the unconscionable behaviour of these parents. Surrogacy lawyers, children’s-rights activists and a broad cross-section of the general public have expressed disbelief at this callous act, have rallied in support of Gammy, and have raised more than Bt5 million to fund urgent surgery. And the money is still coming in. A leading Australian child-rights activist is on her way to Thailand to help the surrogate mother and to direct the money towards Gammy’s medical treatment.
The behaviour of these parents is akin to treating children as commodities, with an attitude of “I’ll take this one, but you can have that one back because I don’t like the way it looks.”
Thailand is now reviewing the laws surrounding the surrogacy trade and surrogacy agents. Australia is also reviewing its position and will hopefully make it a criminal offence, regardless of international boundaries, for parents to abandon their children in this way.
