Rice scheme shows the need for reforms

Pheu Thai's nearly bankrupt rice scheme is well timed for the election.

It has cost every voter 10,000 baht in tax money, yet the poor farmers are starving and unpaid, an audit is "unavailable", and astonishingly they are campaigning to continue with this disaster. In a healthy democracy the outgoing government would be shown the door and the opposition likely given a chance to implement their version of rice subsidy - reckoned by academics to be more sustainable and realistic. Yet everyone knows that (boycott or not) Pheu Thai will win by a mile. Perhaps all those "respect my vote" people might want to reflect on this sorry reality and why so many oppose elections until this flawed system is reformed.
