Respect for each other's rights is key to democracy
Re: "We need to start loving one another again", Editorial, July 21
Democracy is not about love and harmony. Every time people start feeling nostalgic, I wonder if we actually ever had peace and love and harmony. We have been encouraged to love the three pillars - the nation, the monarchy and religions (could be a singular noun referring to Buddhism, in my view). We barely sought to understand and promote peace and harmony through respect for human rights. You don't have to love and seek eternal unity with your neighbour. Once you respect their rights to be and think whatever they wish, you can coexist and contribute to society.
