Protesters violating own principle of non-violence

Re: "A coup is the last thing protesters want", Letters, January 14.

Vint Chavala states that the protesters want change to be achieved in "a spirit of ahimsa". Please forgive my ignorance, I had to do a little research, and found that ahimsa can be defined as not wishing to cause injury through deeds, words or thoughts.

It is clear that at least some protesters and protest leaders have not adhered to this noble principle, instead engaging in violent actions and hurling insults at members of the government, especially the prime minister. Now it is reported that Suthep Thaugsuban has announced plans to detain the prime minister and Cabinet ministers, and has advised them to send their families away "in case of emergencies".

This pronouncement seems to me to be another departure from the spirit of ahimsa. I think Mr Chavala takes too idealistic a view of the protesters' moral standards.
