Out of senseless tragedy, a lone voice of sanity

Amid the total insanity of what is happening in Bangkok - the violence, the recalcitrance of all parties, the refusals to sit down and talk, the childish name-calling, the accusations and counter-accusations - there is one lone voice of sanity.

Naramase Teerarungisgul, father of the 21-year-old Ramkhamhaeng University student Thaweesak Phokaew, who was killed on Saturday, has called for calm.

Even with the trauma of his son's death and the grief he must be suffering, this brave man has gone on record to say he does not want the death to be exploited for political purposes and has called for peace in Thailand.

Would that there were more people like him. But he is a lone voice in the current wilderness of rational thought and behaviour, and I doubt that anyone is listening, for everyone else is too busy shouting their own slogans of hatred and division.

Khun Naramase, I offer you sincere condolences on the needless death of your son and salute your sanity and bravery.
