Once again, Thaksin loses the big battle but not the war

Re: "So far - winners and losers in Thai unrest", Opinion, December 2.

Kavi Chongkittavorn is right that the biggest "winner" for our country is the young Thais who have shown both their awakening and maturity concerning political affairs.

On the other side of the coin, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has shown she never succeeded in breaking away from her brother Thaksin's shadow. That alone could bring about her downfall.

Also, the PM's poor English has never improved. Worse still, her mispronunciation of Thai words, and the mistakes she makes regarding the positions of persons and places, have been a constant source of entertainment for her countrymen.

As for Thaksin, he might not be feeling defeated as yet, but his chances of coming home a hero look slimmer than ever.

The fact that former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij marched to the US Embassy last week to explain the situation also shows that Washington has failed to comprehend the current situation, not only in Thailand but in the Southeast Asia as a whole.
