The Nation

Nothing like some more totalitarian news

In Thursday's The Nation, I was thrilled to see the new supplement "Russia Beyond the Headlines" from the Rossiya Gazeta. Together with the China Daily supplement on Fridays, this will give us a feast of robust views from the two totalitarian giants that will balance the mealy-mouthed liberal bias of the Western press.

I was particularly charmed by the cover story, "Siberia's Heaven for Buddhists" (also titled "Siberia's Haven for Buddhist Faithfuls [sic]"). I'm sure that the spiritual capital of Russian Buddhism will soon become a magnet for Thai Buddhist tourists, especially because of the balmy climate and the abundance of Thai restaurants.

It was also edifying to learn that Catherine the Great was an incarnation of the White Tara.

One factual error. The 12th Pundido Khambo Lama could not possibly have been a close associate of the 14th Dalai Lama if he died in 1927, as the Dalai Lama wasn't born till 1935.
