It’s okay to park at no parking zones as long as you don’t stay “too long”. Wrong-way driving is okay for a “not too long” distance. Queue-jumping is okay if the line is not “too long”. It’s okay to litter sidewalks so long as the trash is not “too big”. It’s all right for police to take bribe so long as it’s not “too much”.
Meanwhile, in 1945, Japan was bombed back to Stone Age. Nineteen years later (1964) it hosted the Summer Olympics. By 1975, It joined G7 as a founding member.
It is “mai pen rai” attitude (it’s all right, as long as ....) that keeps us where we are, in nowhere.
