Mai ben lai attitude keeps us

Re: "Justification for coup goes beyond the obvious explanations", letter, July 19.

Songdej Praditsmanont quoted Anand Panyarachun as saying that the coup is all right so long as it doesn't "stay too long". If that is valid, then .....

It's okay to park at no parking zones as long as you don't stay "too long". Wrong-way driving is okay for a "not too long" distance. Queue-jumping is okay if the line is not "too long". It's okay to litter sidewalks so long as the trash is not "too big". It's all right for police to take bribe so long as it's not "too much".

Meanwhile, in 1945, Japan was bombed back to Stone Age. Nineteen years later (1964) it hosted the Summer Olympics. By 1975, It joined G7 as a founding member.

It is "mai pen rai" attitude (it's all right, as long as ....) that keeps us where we are, in nowhere.
