Keep an eye on your change and the meter
Who is monitoring taxi-drivers?
Rodney Griffith states unequivocally, with no examples given: "Examples are legion; none need be cited".
This is a typical generalisation by a foreigner who lost a few bills to a greedy driver - yes, of whom there are many - who will take advantage of you if you don't monitor by yourself. If you've been coming here for 30 years, what are you waiting for?
Bangkok isn't becoming a nicer, cleaner, greener city full of flowers and doves. No, it's becoming quite the opposite, and a segment of the people who drive their vehicles are some of the most sadistic in terms of feeling the need to show their egos, angst and aggression. Which is a much more important issue/non-issue?
If you stick around longer than 3-4 month jaunts, then you'd know there are always cases of very honest taxi-drivers returning thousands of baht or dollars, phones, passports, wallets, to people of all nationalities. Google it some time. It would put many of us to shame.
The letter puts those in the most noble minority, who do such good things, in the gutter of contempt with the most corrupt souls who will extort seasonally adjusted foreigners. Next time, prepare exact change in small bills and coins and make sure to pay only the meter. You could monitor that, surely.
