Is this justice?
On Wednesday the Supreme Court sentenced former permanent secretary of Defence Satien Permthong to two months in jail and fined him Bt4,000 for a false assets declaration. However, he was given a suspended jail sentence since he does not have a previous conviction. Satien is also banned from taking up any government jobs for five years, counting from February 15, 2008 - the date he left his executive post, to February this year.
In summation, for an act worthy of two months in jail, a Bt4,000 fine and a ban from government jobs for five years, he actually got just a Bt4,000 fine. The court has taken five and a half years to reach this conclusion. How much has that cost the taxpayer? Why waste the time when there are open-and-shut cases of much bigger proportions against a former prime minister predating this offence that have not yet been attended to?
