Interestingly, some farmers have been paid

Ref: "Rice-pledge catastrophe could be final straw for Thailand", Opinion, January 31.

Thanong Khanthong was right that the rice-pledging populist policy, which was a brainchild of Thaksin Shinawatra, was designed both to win farmers' votes and to allow rampant corruption among government politicians.

To rub salt into the wound, caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck is also rumoured to have recently paid for the rice her government bought from farmers in her home province of Chiang Mai first - before those in other provinces.

That is why we see more farmer protests in the lower North and Central region than in the upper North.
