Govt ignores queries on illegal logging
At an area called Wang Dong in Saiyok district of Kanchanaburi, local villagers have observed a backhoe clearing a road along the mountains. Suspiciously, this backhoe works mostly at night. I have heard it myself.
The mountains are located near these GPS coordinates: 14 degrees 8' 36" North; 99 degrees 15' 20" East (14.143333N, 99.255556E).
The land is under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Department (Krom Bamai), which at least three people have telephoned about it. However, the department doesn't seem interested in investigating. And the backhoe keeps working. The villagers think someone is clearing a road so they can (illegally) cut mai daeng trees, some of them quite large. Would The Nation please inquire about this? Maybe you can help save a forest.
