Ref: "Academics divided over appointed PM for next govt", news, yesterday.
Academics really live in their own world and are paper-driven in trying to solve our impasse.
The real world is such that within 110 days Suthep Thaugsuban has succeeded in doing what many never thought possible, such as barring Thaksin Shinawatra from returning to Thailand and making life difficult for the Shinawatra family and lackeys. MPs and also the PM are under a legal cloud.
Suthep’s aim is to eradicate that family’s power for good by conducting reform first and an election later.
Under the existing legal framework, Thaksin has manipulated things successfully by putting his cronies in many regulatory bodies, state enterprises, the police force, Army and government departments.
Thaksin’s drive is almost complete. Independent agencies and the judiciary have just about come under his influence, so Suthep believes that there is no half-way.
An appointed caretaker PM with a council of respected and independent members is necessary. What he has in mind for reform are the election of provincial governors and the police force and a life-time period for pursuing corruption charges.
Above all, he has publicly declared that he will leave politics and that there will be no premiership for him once caretaker PM Yingluck Shinawatra declares that “I have had enough”.
Just imagine, what will happen to Thailand then? I imagine that it will be so sweet for so many!
