Emergency decree could backfire badly on govt

The government's emergency decree is intended to scare protesters away and draw the Army away from its "neutral" stance.

Sure, some protesters will stay away, but others will remain and more join in as an act of defiance. We might well see an even larger number of demonstrators. Thais are rising up against a tyrannical regime and they will not be deterred.

For a corrupt government which has had no effective power over the day-to-day running of the state for the last two months to impose emergency law is a joke. This is the government that has flouted law, torn at the Constitution and made a mockery of the judiciary.

As for the Army, it will remain "neutral". It will not be intimidated.

If the emergency decree fails as I expect it will, the government will become a laughingstock, a decaying remnant of the Thaksin regime.
